Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
