Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
