In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
